The University of The West Indies, Five Islands Campus
Ai And Cybersecurity Research Conference
The Caribbean region is on the cusp of a technological renaissance, driven by cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) research and innovation. This pivotal initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to foster collaboration, share knowledge, and strategize on leveraging AI to propel sustainable development across the Caribbean. As AI continues to transform various sectors globally, the Caribbean is poised to harness this technology to enhance healthcare, education, tourism, agriculture, and more. By raising awareness of AI ethics, risks, and responsible implementation, this initiative aims to inspire innovative thinking and bolster the region’s capacity for AI adoption through skills-building and workforce development.
During July 8-10, 2024, I was afforded the opportunity to participate in the University of West Indies Five Island Campus’ first-ever conference on AI and Cyber. Participants gained exposure to groundbreaking AI research and real-world applications, and network with leading researchers, innovators, and policymakers, to acquire new knowledge and perspectives to inform their work with AI. This initiative will inspire the implementation of impactful AI solutions in the Caribbean, establishing thought leadership in AI research and innovation. It will also showcase excellence in technology and interdisciplinary studies at the University of the West Indies (UWIFIC), attracting top students and faculty in AI and related fields, and forming new research collaborations and external partnerships.
Furthermore, the initiative aims to promote Antigua and Barbuda (A&B) as a hub for technology and innovation in the region, contributing to a thriving AI ecosystem and knowledge economy. By inspiring new entrepreneurial ventures and attracting foreign investment, it addresses sustainable development priorities with AI, positioning the Caribbean at the forefront of technological advancement and innovation.
