Alessandra Iovine: Connecting Sustainability, Finance, and Social Impact
Alessandra Iovine’s career reflects a consistent belief that professional expertise can serve a purpose beyond business performance. From economics and financial risk management to education, sustainability, and social impact, her journey has been shaped by a desire to use knowledge to improve lives and support a more sustainable future. As Director of Sustainability at Mastercard, she brings together these areas of experience to advance climate action through collaboration, fundraising, and partnerships.
Originally from Italy, Alessandra moved to Lisbon to pursue a double-degree master’s program in economics at the University of Naples Federico II and Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics. Her academic training in economics, finance, and public policy provided a strong analytical foundation, while her involvement in volunteer initiatives introduced her to the connection between business expertise and social impact. These early experiences helped shape a career that would span financial institutions, international organizations, educational settings, and sustainability initiatives.
Today, through Mastercard’s Priceless Planet Coalition, Alessandra leads fundraising initiatives across Europe, North America, and Latin America, bringing together partners, clients, and internal teams to support global reforestation and climate action. Her work draws on a broad understanding of financial systems and stakeholder engagement, while remaining grounded in a central belief: economic progress, environmental responsibility, and human well-being should advance together.
Building a Career Around Purpose
Alessandra’s early professional experiences established the foundation for her approach to social impact. During her university years, she served as Finance Director at 180 Degrees Consulting, a university-based social impact consultancy. Alongside managing partnerships, sponsorships, and financial responsibilities, she led a consulting project for the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation focused on social investment and innovative financing mechanisms. The project received the Best Branch Project award, for the great commitment and accomplishment delivering a set of relevant and actionable recommendations.
She later joined the Central Bank of Portugal as a Research Assistant, contributing to microeconometric research on educational choices and social mobility. Her work supported analyses that informed education policy recommendations for Portugal’s Ministry of Education. Her master’s thesis, presented in the 9th Portuguese Economic Development Conference in the European Space, received the Best Master’s Thesis Award and was subsequently published by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation.
One recommendation arising from this research was the integration of volunteering into secondary education. For Alessandra, the idea reflected an important lesson about how young people develop. Education provides knowledge, but experiences of service help students build empathy, responsibility, and a stronger understanding of their role in society.
Her experience at the European Central Bank in Frankfurt broadened her perspective on international economic affairs while reinforcing her commitment to sustainability and responsible finance. As co-founder of the ECB’s Social Impact Community, she spearheaded efforts to promote dialogue on sustainable finance, ESG integration, responsible investment, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She engaged senior leaders across the institution, led initiatives on social impact investing, and championed discussions on how monetary policy and investment practices could contribute to long-term environmental and social value.
At Banco BPI, where she spent nearly five years in the Risk Management Division, Alessandra developed further expertise in quantitative analysis, risk modeling, and financial decision-making. She worked on credit risk models while advocating for the inclusion of environmental, social, and governance considerations in credit risk frameworks. Alongside this work, she evaluated social projects through a partnership between Banco BPI and the “la Caixa” Foundation, reviewing initiatives in education, social inclusion, and community development. These experiences strengthened her understanding of how financial resources can support lasting social progress when directed toward meaningful goals.
A Leadership Philosophy Rooted in Empathy
For Alessandra, leadership is measured by the ability to unite people around a common purpose and translate vision into collective action. Throughout her career, she has fostered collaboration across corporate, nonprofit, educational, and civil society organizations, creating environments where diverse perspectives, talents, and experiences can come together to generate meaningful and sustainable impact.
She identifies leadership, empathy, and continuous development as three qualities that have played a significant role in her professional growth. Leadership has helped her mobilize people around a common vision, while empathy has enabled her to understand different perspectives and recognize the people behind organizational goals. Her experience across different countries, cultures, and sectors has reinforced her belief that the most effective solutions are those grounded in a deep understanding of the people and communities they are designed to serve.
Her commitment to education offers another perspective on this philosophy. While volunteering in the Dominican Republic, she taught economics and English and helped students prepare university applications and professional development activities. Later, in Portugal, she taught mathematics, business studies, sociology, and economics in public and international schools.
These experiences reinforced her belief that education should support more than academic achievement. It should encourage critical thinking, self-awareness, resilience, and personal growth. She introduced mindfulness and meditation practices into the classroom, driven by her belief that education has the power to shape not only skilled professionals, but also conscious, compassionate, and purpose-driven individuals capable of contributing positively to their communities and society as a whole. This people-centered perspective continues to inform her professional approach. As she has explained, “Leadership is not about authority but about inspiring collaboration, building trust, and empowering others to contribute their best.” The principle is particularly relevant to sustainability, where progress often depends on cooperation among stakeholders with different responsibilities, priorities, and expectations.
Making Sustainability Part of Business Strategy
Alessandra’s transition into sustainability brought together the different strands of her career. In 2024, she moved fully into sustainability consulting, helping financial institutions and public-sector organizations integrate climate risk, sustainable finance, and ESG principles into their strategies and governance frameworks. She subsequently joined Mastercard as Director of Sustainability within the Priceless Planet Coalition.
Her role involves leading fundraising initiatives across Europe, North America, and Latin America in support of Mastercard’s reforestation commitment. The coalition brings together businesses and other partners around environmental restoration, including the commitment to plant 100 million trees worldwide.
Delivering such initiatives requires more than establishing environmental targets. It involves building partnerships, securing support, coordinating teams, and helping stakeholders understand the broader value of climate action. Alessandra’s experience in financial analysis and risk management provides a practical understanding of business priorities, while her background in social impact keeps the environmental purpose at the center of the work.
One of the challenges she has encountered is balancing the social and environmental purpose of sustainability initiatives with the commercial realities of the business world. Corporate decisions often rely on measurable targets, financial returns, and performance indicators. Although these measures are important, she believes they should not overshadow the need to protect ecosystems, address climate change, and consider the interests of future generations.
Her approach is to build a bridge between these perspectives. Sustainability can be incorporated into business decisions without reducing its value to commercial benefits alone. For Alessandra, the long-term objective is to ensure that environmental responsibility remains an essential consideration in how organizations operate and assess success.
Her work beyond corporate sustainability reflects the same commitment to collaboration. As a co-founder of Forum of Energy and Climate, she helped establish a civil society initiative connecting academia, business, government, and policymakers across Portuguese-speaking countries. Through conferences, television programming, cross-sector partnerships, and public awareness initiatives, the forum promotes informed dialogue and mobilizes broader engagement in climate action. The experience further developed her skills in stakeholder engagement and coalition building, which remain central to her work.
Recognition Through Research and Action
Alessandra’s professional journey has included recognition for both academic achievement and social impact. The Best Master’s Thesis Award acknowledged her research on educational choices and social mobility, while the Best Branch Project award recognized her work on social investment and innovative financing mechanisms at 180 Degrees Consulting.
She also completed a postgraduate degree in Sustainability Management at ISEG Executive Education with distinction, strengthening her knowledge of sustainability, climate action, and sustainable finance. In 2026, she was featured in EliteX’s Prominent Women Innovators in Sustainability & ESG, recognizing her contributions across sustainability and climate action.
Beyond formal awards, her experience at institutions such as the Central Bank of Portugal, the European Central Bank, Banco BPI, and Mastercard reflects the range of perspectives she has brought into her work. Her contributions as an educator, speaker, moderator, and sustainability practitioner have also allowed her to engage with different audiences across sectors and regions.
For Alessandra, however, recognition is most meaningful when it creates opportunities to contribute to something larger than individual achievement. The projects she values most are those that deliver tangible benefits to people, communities, and the environment.
A Future Focused on People and the Planet
Looking ahead, Alessandra intends to continue building a career at the intersection of business, sustainability, education, and social impact, taking on roles where she can connect people, organizations, and ideas to address complex challenges and create meaningful impact. While corporate sustainability remains an important part of this journey, she is equally drawn to opportunities that allow her to work across markets and sectors, engage with diverse stakeholders, and translate strategy into tangible impact.
Her experience has increasingly reinforced her interest in working within complex international ecosystems, where progress depends not only on strong ideas but also on the ability to build trust, understand different perspectives, navigate regulatory and institutional realities, and bring multiple stakeholders together around a common objective.
Education holds a particularly important place in this vision. One of her ambitions is to contribute to the creation and funding of schools, foundations and educational programs in underserved regions. She believes that many communities have significant talent and potential but lack access to the opportunities needed to develop them. Investment in education, especially for young people facing disadvantages, can help reduce inequality and expand the choices available to future generations.
Her broader goal is to support a future in which economic development, social progress, and environmental protection reinforce one another. Achieving that balance requires cooperation among businesses, governments, financial institutions, academia, and civil society. Her experience across these different sectors has shown her the value of building bridges between perspectives that might otherwise remain separate and turning those connections into practical action.
Alessandra’s advice to aspiring leaders reflects the values that have guided her own journey: remain open to learning, have the courage to move beyond familiar paths, and never lose sight of the human purpose behind professional success. She believes that technical knowledge and professional achievement matter most when they are combined with humility, compassion, and a genuine willingness to serve others.
Her career demonstrates how analytical expertise can evolve into broader leadership and impact. From researching education and social mobility and working with financial and economic analysis, to advancing sustainability initiatives and building international partnerships, she has consistently sought opportunities to connect professional capability with meaningful outcomes.
For Alessandra, a successful career finds its deepest meaning in remaining true to one’s values, serving a purpose greater than oneself, and contributing positively to the world. True success lies not only in personal achievement, but also in the opportunities we create for others, the people we empower, and the lives we touch. Ultimately, our greatest legacy is the positive change we leave behind and the more inclusive, sustainable, and equitable future we help create for generations to come.
