Shally Bhasin: Building a Distinguished Career in Dispute Resolution Through Preparation, Integrity, and Purpose
Some legal careers are shaped by a single defining case or position. Shally Bhasin’s career has been built differently, through years of preparation, demanding disputes, evolving areas of law, and a consistent commitment to professional integrity. Since beginning her legal career in 1996 after graduating from the University of Delhi, Bhasin has developed a broad litigation practice while steadily taking on matters involving complex commercial, regulatory, constitutional, and public-interest questions.
Today, as an Equity Partner in the Dispute Resolution Team at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. (SAM), Bhasin brings decades of courtroom experience to a practice spanning data protection and TMT law, infrastructure, financial services, banking, aviation, power, oil and gas, and steel. Her work includes appearances before the Supreme Court, High Courts, and specialized tribunals.
Her journey reflects a simple belief that has remained constant throughout her career: meaningful professional success is not created through one achievement, but through the discipline to keep learning, preparing, and contributing over time.
Leadership Built on Preparation and Trust
For Bhasin, leadership begins with the quality of the work. Her approach is grounded in three qualities she considers central to her success: preparation, perseverance, and integrity. In litigation, where matters can involve thousands of pages of records, complex regulations, and significant financial consequences, preparation is not simply useful. It is essential.
“Confidence cannot come from personality alone. It has to come from having done the work,” Bhasin explains.
That belief also shapes the way she approaches long and difficult matters. Litigation can involve years of uncertainty, setbacks, adjournments, and unexpected developments. Bhasin believes that perseverance means maintaining professional standards even when an outcome remains unclear.
Integrity and loyalty are equally important to her leadership philosophy. She sees trust as one of a lawyer’s most valuable assets and believes professional relationships must be protected through honesty, reliability, and mutual support. For Bhasin, loyalty extends to colleagues, clients, institutions, the profession, and the relationships built over many years.
This approach reflects a wider understanding of leadership. It is not limited to directing others or holding a senior position. It is about setting standards through conduct and creating confidence among the people who depend on that leadership.
A Broad View of Law and Its Changing Role
Bhasin’s professional experience has covered a remarkably wide range of legal matters. After beginning her career in the chamber of an Advocate-on-Record, she established her own practice and became an Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court of India in 2004. She later joined the practice that became Suman Khaitan & Co., followed by more than a decade at Agarwal Law Associates. In 2022, after more than 25 years in the profession, she joined SAM as an Equity Partner in its Dispute Resolution practice in New Delhi.
This breadth has become an important part of her professional approach. Her work has taken her across telecom, banking, infrastructure, insolvency, taxation, environmental matters, white-collar crime, aviation, energy, and constitutional issues.
Rather than viewing these areas as separate experiences, Bhasin has used them to develop a wider understanding of how legal, commercial, regulatory, and social considerations interact. That perspective is particularly relevant as technology, AI, cross-border commerce, regulation, and questions around access to justice continue to reshape the legal profession.
Her engagement with emerging issues extends beyond individual disputes. She has spoken at industry and academic forums on subjects including the judiciary’s role in nation building, gender bias in AI, and the changing relationship between technology, regulation, and law.
Challenges That Became Sources of Strength
Bhasin entered litigation in the mid-1990s, when senior courtroom advocacy remained overwhelmingly male. Establishing credibility required consistent performance and a willingness to let preparation and results speak for themselves.
She recalls that women could sometimes feel the need to work harder to be regarded as equals and to demonstrate their authority and readiness. Such an environment left little room for complacency. The answer, in her experience, was not to focus only on the barriers but to use difficult circumstances as opportunities for growth.
The demanding nature of her work reinforced that mindset. Long-running disputes and cases involving evolving areas of law taught her to focus on what could be done well in the present rather than waiting for complete certainty.
“You do not need certainty to move forward. You need the discipline to do the next thing well,” she says.
That principle has become one of the defining ideas of her career. It reflects the reality of complex litigation while also offering a broader lesson about professional resilience.
Recognition That Reflects Collective Effort
Over the years, Bhasin’s work has received recognition from respected legal publications and professional organizations. Her distinctions include being named India Lawyer of the Year at the Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific Awards in 2024, recognition among Benchmark’s Top 100 Women in Litigation for Commercial and Transactions, and recognition as a Litigation Star for Commercial and Transactions. She has also been recognized as a Distinguished Practitioner for Dispute Resolution by asialaw.
Yet she views these achievements through a team-oriented lens. Significant legal matters are rarely the work of one person, and she credits the talented lawyers with whom she has worked throughout her career.
This perspective is consistent with her broader view of professional success. For Bhasin, recognition matters, but it is not the only measure of a meaningful career. The manner in which a result is achieved and the value created for clients, colleagues, institutions, and society are equally important.
Building the Next Generation of Legal Leaders
Looking ahead, Bhasin’s ambitions extend beyond growing her own practice. At SAM, she aims to continue developing a strong Dispute Resolution practice, particularly across complex regulatory and commercial disputes, telecom, banking, insolvency, and domestic and international arbitration.
A major part of that vision is developing people. She believes a successful practice cannot depend on one individual. It must develop lawyers who are curious, rigorous, independent, and ready to take responsibility.
This includes creating greater opportunities for women in senior litigation. Bhasin wants more women to view leadership in litigation not as an exception, but as a career they can build and lead.
Her forward-looking approach also recognizes that the profession itself is changing. Technology, AI, regulation, cross-border business, and evolving expectations around access to justice are creating new questions for lawyers. Bhasin intends to remain engaged with these changes while continuing to contribute to public-interest and constitutional work when opportunities arise.
A Career Defined by Purpose
Bhasin’s professional story ultimately reaches beyond courtroom victories and career milestones. Her involvement in matters concerning constitutional rights and public interest, including the legal challenge to Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code and proceedings concerning legal recognition of same-sex marriage, reflects her belief that law can serve a purpose beyond commercial outcomes.
She sees the legal profession as an important instrument through which individuals, businesses, and institutions can pursue fairness and accountability. That belief has given her career a wider dimension, connecting commercial legal practice with public responsibility.
Her advice to the next generation reflects the same long-term perspective. She encourages young professionals to avoid becoming overly focused on reaching the next title, promotion, award, or milestone. Instead, she believes they should focus on the person they are becoming throughout the journey.
Her message is particularly clear for young women entering demanding professions: “Do not wait for permission to believe that you belong in the room.”
For Shally Bhasin, a distinguished legal career is not about winning every day. It is about maintaining high standards over many years, continuing to learn, and becoming more capable and useful along the way. At SAM, that philosophy continues to guide both her legal practice and her commitment to developing the people and institutions that will shape the profession’s future.
